SAN FRANCISCO -- The Cubby Creatures will be performing at Yuri's Night, a
worldwide event that celebrates the dawning of the Space Age. The show will
take place at 590 Minnesota Street on Saturday, April 12th. The event marks the 42nd anniversary of the night Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human being to see the planet Earth from space. The event will also honor the lost crew of the space shuttle Columbia. Joining the Cubby Creatures on stage will be the Chantigs and the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association. Sources close to event organizer Josh Babcock have also claimed that the legendary local mystery group the Druggles will play a short "surprise" set at the show. See a flyer for the event here: yuri's flyer. In addition to rock music, there will be projection art based on film, video, and slides at the event. Mr. Babcock stated that there would be a space costume contest, and that all attendees are encouraged to dress "as their favorite space oddity." Further, Mr. Babcock stated that representatives from local space-enthusiast organizations will also be at the event attempting to "raise awareness of space." Cubby reporters have also learned that a real-life rocket engine will be ignited at the end of the night. This rumor could not be confirmed at press time, however. Additionally, Mr. Babcock gave no comment when asked by reporters about widely circulating rumors that the show would be a particularly psychedelic experience. The Cubby Creatures have given confirmation that they will be joined on stage by guest musicians Dave Dunstan of the Shimmer Kids and Ajax Green of both Granfaloon Bus and Thunderbleed a.k.a. Blind Vengeance. The Cubbies stated that they would be performing in costume. The group also stated that violinist Emily Davis unfortunately would not be able to play the show because she will be in Mexico "rethinking her life." The Cubby Creatures did not elaborate on this statement. Brian Weaver, who plays guitar and bass with the Cubbies, could not verify rumors that he is also rethinking his life, but after refusing to comment added, "Aren't we all, all the time?" Mr. Dunstan, who has played on stage with the Cubby Creatures in the past, tried to explain the turn toward introspection and philosophizing among the Cubbies as of late. He stated, "I think they have been taking drugs together." This was not confirmed by any member of the Cubby Creatures, however. Cubby guitarist and keyboardist Bill Fisher has also recently created a psychedelic slide projection display that will be able to be viewed at the Yuri's Night event. When asked if the slides had anything to do with space, he replied, "Oh, they're spacey. Like a nebula is spacey." |
