SAN FRANCISCO -- Last Saturday, April 30, the Cubby Creatures unveiled their new CD
After the Deprogramming at a lavish release party and show held at the Rodent
Records warehouse in northeast Potrero Hill. Considered a grand success by the Creatures themselves, the multimedia event was accompanied by the release of their new Missalette, #17--edited by Cubby Creatures front man Bill Fisher-- art installations by local artists Jenny Hynes and China Tamblyn--wife of Rodent Records founder Elton Ridge--a Rodent Records studio open house, and a light show. The Cubby Creatures reportedly gave away about 100 CDs to the event's attendees, and due to donations being accepted only lost a minimal amount of money, unlike at other events they’ve thrown where they’ve lost large sums of money. Other musical guests included Rodent Records bands Baby Birds, Liesl’s Wet Dress, Midnight Bombers, Chantigs, and Natural Fonzie, who are also soon releasing a new CD on Rodent Records. The Cubby Creatures' new full-length CD is, according to the Cubby Creatures, "a mixture of old and new. Two of the songs--'Bonemaker's Theme' and 'Night Comfort Theater,'--were written when Jol was still in the band. A few more--'There's Always Now,' 'Wallet,' and 'Age of Smoke'--were written after Jol left, but before Cubby clarinetist Karl had left. And the rest were written by the current Cubby Creatures--Bill, Brian, Emily, and Jason--and are indicative of a new direction and a new Cubby sound. After the Deprogramming is only the second full-length album the Cubbies have produced in their 7-year career, and it is their first release since 2002’s three sides of cubby single. |
