SAN FRANCISCO -- Cubby Missalette #11 was released with great fanfare to the public on August 11 at the Cement Beach Guerilla Rock Fest at which The Cubby Creatures performed for the first time in four months.  This eleventh missalette was being referred to as Missalette #111 because of its theme that all submissions are 111 words, give or take 11.

Karl Soehnlein, cubby clarinetist and recent winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Men's Fiction for his book The World of Normal Boys, came up with the idea for this most recent missalette and took it upon himself to assemble and publish the zine.

When asked what gave him the idea for the theme of the new missalette, Soehnlein responded, "From metaphysical inspiration." When asked to elaborate, he stated that he, "...decided to flip over three tarot cards and I got the Ace of Wands, the Ace of Swords and the Ace of Cups, which roughly means, 'to keep to your truest vision, you must turn your ideas into action, but do it with love.' At first this seemed too vague to be helpful, but then I started thinking about the one Ace that I didn't get, the Ace of Disks, which is the money card, and the absence of that told me that whatever action I took had to be achieved inexpensively. So, after much mulling of this MetaCubby phenomenon, I figured (1) that there should be a new Missalette, which is an expression of Cubby 'vision,' so to speak; (2) that I should take it upon myself to edit it, which satisfied the "action" part; and (3) of course I should do it with love in my heart, because otherwise I'd just bitch about the work and what's the point of that? And then I thought, if every submission was limited in word count, the ultimate xeroxing cost would be cheaper, thus saving all of us some money. I thought about doing 100 words, which is a nice round number, but then figured those three Aces -- 1, 1, 1 -- were a sign not to be ignored. So that's where 111 came from."

Apparently the Cubbies have already given away all the copies of Missalette #11, but according to Brian Weaver, cubby bassist, "We'll probably do a second printing for the Embryo Show."  The Embryo show is scheduled for Sept. 22, 2001, and is in honor of the release of the Embryo Compilation:03, which Weaver compiled himself.

When asked what he thought of the completed missalette that he put together, Soehnlein remarked, "I think it's an explosion of artistic talent not seen in San Francisco literary and artistic circles in a long time, perhaps since the heydey of the Cockettes in 1971."
