THE CUBBY CREATURES Current Bio       In 1997, after eons of freeform movement over the planet, the Cubby force converged in the San Francisco Mission District. From this nexus was born what we now know as the Cubby Creatures, a rock band whose stated mission is to harness, manifest and disseminate the creative energy of Cubby. As a rock band the manifestations expectedly took the form of song, and then album. But the multifarious Cubby force has also been channeled into a zine, the Cubby Missalette, a website, cubby.net, and, for a time, a cable access show called CubbyVision.       In its initial form the rock band had five members: Joel Perez, singer and guitarist, Emily Davis, violin, Brian Weaver, bass and vocals, Karl Soehnlein, clarinet, and Matt M., drums. That same year the Cubbies issued the Cubby Christmas Album, which celebrates the yuletide spirit, while at the same time dragging it merrily through the mud. No one who has heard it has felt the same about Santa since.       Shortly thereafter, Jason Gonzales took over on drums and Bill Fisher joined on keyboards and guitars. Now a six piece, the band received orders from their higher power to create a genuine LP. Taking advantage of their unique talent for low cost alchemy, the resulting record could only be called "The Blessed Invention." The album was a vehicle for their fully realized brand of amalgamated inspiration, and, like a font of molten rock, the Cubby released its unique vibe to flow liberally over the music scene.       Just as this mass of creative magma was beginning to cool, a new mass was bubbling to the surface. Guided only by the forces of coincidence, the Cubbies presented its musical tale of an unfortunately rodent-faced girl to San Francisco’s Rodent Records in hopes that they would help them immortalize their message to the downtrodden. Together they made the EP "Who Remembers Kathy Barra?" which became a favorite among college radio devotees.       In 2002, the long time band visionary Jol departed to sew the Cubby roots into the eastern seaboard. The remaining Cubby Creatures put the fruitful partnership with Rodent records into action once again to create their version of Nick Drake's "Fly," which would serve as the centerpiece to their most recent release, the "three sides of cubby” single.       Currently the Cubby Creatures continue their mission as a four-piece (Karl left to pursue his writing career) and labor to fulfill their recently prophesied destiny. According to unseen sources, they have been asked to complete an album that will combine the disparate elements of myth and the material plane to create a decidedly non-New Age rock n’ roll juggernaut. |
